Other cities have the revenue tools to fund the services their citizens need. Today, Toronto does not have those tools. It is time to change the fiscal framework. Property taxes cannot fund what this City needs.
Toronto, and for that matter, Ontario, lags behind most jurisdictions on access to information. The essential terms of contracts are often redacted using business confidentiality as the reason. Other places have thrown business confidentiality out the window. They publish the full contract and it has not prevented businesses from seeking to do business with the City. We should be able to see where our money is being spent. If I am Mayor, I will make sure that you get to see not just the fluff, but also the meat and bones of every deal.
Torontonians deserve a transit system that can get them anywhere in this City reliably, efficiently, at a reasonable cost, and, above all, safely. We don't have that today. We can have that tomorrow.
Having the same people deciding on issues year after year is unhealthy. There is a reason corporate boards generally require term limits. It is to prevent stagnation. New people bring new ideas. Fresh outlooks as times change can enhance governance. I support councillor term limits.
Toronto needs the tools to meet its service demands. It does not have those tools today. It will tomorrow if new tools are adopted.
All wards need adequate coverage. We do not have that today. Cars can't be eliminated when there are not adequate alternatives.
Publish all contracts in full.
We need holistic solutions not patchwork respite centers. The homeless need homes first, treatment for health and addiction maladies. More jails are not the answer.
Ontario (Toronto included) is far behind best practices regarding conflict of interest rules. It is about time we fixed this.
Toronto can benefit from its economic power much more than it does today. Rather than increase taxes, share in the economic growth the City supports.
